Meet Steve.
After a double knee surgery.
Steve had to have both of his knees replaced, a bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) surgery due to severe arthritis. He scheduled an appointment with Physical Therapy of Boulder before his surgery in order to check out our clinic and make sure we could provide the therapy he needed after his surgery.
When he returned to us after his TKA surgery, he had a long and challenging road ahead of him.
Rehabilitation after a bilateral TKA surgery has its pros and cons. The main benefit of having both knees replaced at the same time gives the patient the opportunity to recover more quickly than if they had one knee replaced at a time.
“The main challenge is that trying to recover from replacing both knees at the same time is much more difficult, because the patient cannot rely on having a stable leg to support them.”
But Steve was driven. We knew he could do it!
His first few weeks were rough on him. During each session, we talked about what he was experiencing as he healed. During every session, we also talked about the specific challenges that he faced and practiced techniques and exercises that would help him overcome those challenges.
In fact, Steve made much faster progress than anyone had anticipated.
At the end of our twelve weeks together after having both knees replaced, Steve could walk and climb and descend stairs easily! He was even able to return to his hobby of flying scale model airplanes.
He thanked us for helping him face his challenges and being responsive to his issues and concerns.
His willingness to work and communicate about the issues he faced really impressed us at PTOB!
